A few Basics about the Website
There are two ways to navigate the website. First you can hover over an item on the main menu and then click on one of drop down items. Or you can click on a main menu item and a new page will appear from which you can choose an item.
You can enlarge most of the images on the website by clicking on the image.
The top menu of the website contains ten subjects:
Home – where you are now. This section contains current news and announcements.
The Society – This section contains information about the Civil War Philatelic Society (Society). This includes a history of the Society, newsletter, convention news, benefits of membership, how to join, Constitution and By-Laws, officers, and award winners.
CWP – This section contains information about the former Confederate Philatelist (CP) and the current Civil War Philatelist (CWP), the official publication of the Society. For those interested in learning about Civil War philately, a selection of articles from the CP is included which can be read or downloaded by all visitors. For those interested in writing an article for the CP, guidelines are provided as well as the procedure for submitting articles. Finally this section includes the searchable CP. This feature is very useful for those conducting research and are looking for specific information that may be included in the pages of the CP. Issues for the last five years are reserved for members only.
Basics – This section provides basic information on many of the different areas of Civil War philately, such as postage rates, stampless markings, postmasters’ provisionals, general issues, patriotic covers, private express mail, and prisoner of war mail. Each area is illustrated with examples. By clicking on any image in this section an enlarged image will appear which can be downloaded.
Authentication – This section details the history of the Authentication Service and how one can get an item authenticated. The most important feature in this section is the ability to search past authentication certificates. The robust search function will immediately find the item or items of interest. The feature is available to all visitors.
Resources – This section is most useful for researching different area of Civil War philately and as well as related areas. Confederate documents include legislation that set Confederate postage rates, reports of the Postmaster General, instructions issued by the Confederate Post Office Department, and solicitations for carrying the mail. Union documents include the postal laws and regulations of 1859, some of which were followed by the Confederacy. Also different lists of post offices that are helpful to the student of the Civil War. Other items include old stamp catalogs, books and monographs on various subjects and exhibits.
Donate – This section describes three different ways you can donate to the Society. Make a cash donation to the Society (PayPal accepted), or make a contribution by donating to the Fund for the Future of Civil War Philately, or the Civil War Legacy Program.
Store – This section lists the publications the Society currently has for sale. These include recent publications of the Society as well as other publications on Civil War philately. Orders for Society publications can be placed using PayPal.
Members – This section is for and about Society members. This is where members can check their membership status and renew their membership.
