The Register of Officers and Agents is very useful because it lists the town, county, postmaster and his compensation. Thus, it is possible to get a good idea of how much business was transacted by a post office right before the war.
The Registers are quite large, the largest section being that for the Post Office Department. For this reason the post office pages include an asterisk in their page numbers (i.e. *122). The volume below is an extract and only contains information on the War Department and the Post Office Department.
