In 1924 after more than 20 years away from the philatelic publishing business August Dietz began the Southern Philatelist (SP). The primary purpose of this new venture was to provide a vehicle for the serialization of his monumental work, titled “The Story of the Post-Office Department of the Confederate States of America and Its Postage Stamps” in the SP. The serialization was completed in the August 1928 issue and the following year was published as The Postal Service of the Confederate States of America. While most of the pages were devoted to the serialization of his Confederate work, Dietz managed to include other Confederate articles as well as articles of a more general nature. Among these were a series of articles on the Memphis, Tennessee provisionals by Thomas H. Pratt. These were combined and published in 1929 as The Postmaster’s Provisionals of Memphis, Tennessee in 1929.
In the November 1928 issue he began the serialization of “A Specialized Catalog of the Postage Stamps of the Confederate States of America.” In 1931 this was published as a catalog, the first of what would be four editions through 1959.
With the October 1929 issue Dietz closed the pages of the SP. Apparently he recognized that the journal was too specialized and a change was needed. The next month he launched The New Southern Philatelist which had a more international and general focus.
