US Postage Used During Occupation

U.S. Postage Used on Covers During Union Occupation

DUE 6 on soldier’s cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on AUG/17/1863.
Due 3 on soldier’s cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on AUG/19/1863. Endorsed by E. A. Tucker, Adjutant, 26th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
U.S. 3¢ rose and U.S. 1¢ blue on cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on AUG/21/1863. Three 3¢ stamps and one 1¢ stamp paid the 10¢ postage rate for a letter weighing less than ½-ounce to Canada. Cover was backed stamped TORONTO/CW on SP/2/63.
Due 3 on soldier’s cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on OCT/3 (no year date). Endorsed by Major W. B. Holbrook, 72th Illinois Regiment. Docketing in pencil indicates that the letter was written by E. A. McConnell, at “Natchez Sept 28/63” and “rec’d Oct. 12th.”
Due 3 on soldier’s cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on NOV/20 (no year date). Endorsed by Colonel G. F. Wiles, 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
US 3¢ rose canceled with 7-bar-grid killer on cover postmarked on VICKSBURG/MISS. on DEC/25 (no year date). Docketing in pencil indicates that the letter was received on “January 13th 1864.”
US 3¢ rose canceled with 7-bar-grid killer on cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on JAN/14/1864. Docketing in pencil indicates that the letter was “Recd Jan 31st.”
U.S. 3¢ rose canceled with 7-bar-grid killer on cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on APR/7/1864. Docketed in pencil indicates that the letter was dated “April 6/64.”
U.S. 3¢ rose canceled with 7-bar-grid killer on Adams Express Company envelope postmarked VICKSBURG/—– on JUN/15/1864. Docketing in ink indicates that the letter was answered on July 2.
U.S. 3¢ rose canceled with a 7-bar-grid killer on cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on JUL/26/1864.
U.S. 3¢ rose canceled with 7-bar-grid killer on cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS. on DEC/10/1864. The cover franked with a U.S. 3¢ rose was first mailed from NEWTOWN/– on NOV/19. At Vicksburg, the address was crossed out, another stamp was added, the postmark was applied, and the cover was forwarded to New Orleans.
U.S. 3¢ rose canceled with a “crossroads” killer on cover postmarked VICKSBURGH/MISS. on APR/4. Enclosed letter headed “Davis Bend Miss March 31st 1865.”
U.S. 3¢ rose canceled with a “crossroads” killer on cover postmarked VICKSBURGH/MISS. on APR/21. Enclosed letter headed “Hospital near Camp Fisk Vicksburg Miss/Apr. 17th 1865.” Letter written to his mother by Private John F. Kauffman, Company K, 102nd Ohio Infantry.
