From about 1990 to 2010 Warren Sanders maintained a record of postmasters’ provisionals that he found listed in various sources. The records were maintained on card files and included references to the sources, mostly auction houses and the Confederate Philatelist (CP). It is assumed that the references were to images of the provisionals. He also listed some sources as “P,” which is assumed to be an image he obtained.
The card files were maintained prior to the publication of the Confederate States of America Catalog and Handbook of Stamps and Postal History (CSA Catalog) in 2012. Therefore the references were to the catalog numbers and types listed in The New Dietz Confederate States Catalog and Handbook (New Dietz Catalog) published in 1986. An attempt was made to update the New Dietz Catalog numbers and types to the 2012 CSA Catalog numbers.
The original handwritten references are retained with identification of the listing by both the 2012 CSA Catalog number and the 1986 New Dietz Catalog numbers. The 2012 CSA Catalog numbers are listed first followed by the 1986 New Dietz Catalog numbers and types in brackets.
